Bow Down – I Woke Up Like This!

Today, we prepare to gather for the girls in Nigeria.  As we come together to rally for the safe return of the young ladies of Nigeria who have been viciously taken from their homes, their families and their lives, I could not help but be reminded of the words of Chimamand Ngozi Adichie featured in the song “Flawless” by Beyonce.  So I share them with you as you learn more about this cause.

Where can you get information? I’m glad you asked! Go to www.act4accountability.com or watch the segment on Good Morning America with Martha Raddatz or follow Rev. Dr. Jamal Bryant as he prepares to travel to Nigeria to pray for these young ladies; these daughters and their families.

“We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller.  We say to girls:

You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you will threaten the man

Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage.  I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important.

Now, marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support, but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same?

We raise girls to see each other as competitors, not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men.

We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are.

Feminist: a person who believes in the Social, Political, and Economic Equality of the sexes.”   Chimamand Ngozi Adichie

So as life is ever-changing, I am changing my view of myself and the world.  I am still a Feminist, expressly as defined here. And I also better understand what Beyonce may mean when she recites “Bow down” and retorts, “My Momma taught me good home training. My Daddy taught me how to love my haters. My sister taught me I should speak my mind. My man made me feel so God damn fine. I’m flawless!

You wake up FLAWLESS…

We flawless, Ladies! Tell ‘em. Say, “I look so good tonight!”

I woke up like this! I woke up like this!
